Make clickbait so good, you’ll freak out!

By Brokaw Associate Creative Director/Clickbait Supervisor Mark McKenzie

Oh man, am I glad you clicked this! Here at O-News, we only make cold, hard cash when you click. Because like you, we’re in a nonstop race for clicks, and who cares how we get them! Thankfully there’s clickbait—the most effective way to get the instant attention all of us and our brands crave. So how can you make the best clickbait? Check out these life-changing tips!

TIP 1: Be misleading. Profoundly misleading. So misleading that people might think what you’re saying is true.

EXAMPLE HEADLINES:
This guy just wanted to eat a pear. What he bit into will make your eyes explode.
OR
You won’t believe what these teens are punching!
OR
Make clickbait so good, you’ll freak out!

TIP 2: Use celebrities. Especially celebrities who everyone remembers being attractive but who you can tease as horrifically ugly.

TIP 3: Make your actual content monumentally disappointing. Something so boring or non-informative, it will crush your readers’ spirits.

CONTENT EXAMPLES FROM TIP 1 HEADLINES:
This guy just wanted to eat a pear. What he bit into will make your eyes explode.
CONTENT: That guy’s pear was just a misshapen apple.

You won’t believe what these teens are punching!
CONTENT: They’re punching heavy bags to get in shape.

Make clickbait so good, you’ll freak out!
CONTENT: This disappointing and about-to-get-preachy O-News.

TIP 4: Please don’t make clickbait. It’s a trick! A bad trick. A bad, huckster-y trick that cheapens us all. Sure, we all want attention for our brands. And, of course, clicks. But clickbait, like bad ads, make people feel cheap. And bought. And got.

Instead, let’s make good stuff. Stuff that doesn’t rely on cheap tricks. Stuff that’s honest and relevant and rewards everyone involved.

Like say, this video that will turn your life into a nonstop pleasure cruise.

Have a clickbait-free weekend, everyone!
